Use of metagenomic diagnostics in clinical settings.

Our interest in the microbiome derives from the study of potential interactions between the gut and the eye (gut–eye axis). Within this framework, metagenomics is applied to the ocular surface as an additional diagnostic tool, with the aim of gaining further biological information that can be integrated, when appropriate, into the patient’s overall clinical assessment.

Ophthalmologist

Dr. Alberto Lanfernini

Clinical interest: Systemic Ophthalmology

He provides clinical and diagnostic services in Faenza and Ravenna and is a member of the HLMS in Zurich. When appropriate, his outpatient activity takes into account systemic factors, lifestyle and metabolism. In selected cases, advanced metagenomic tests may be used to explore relationships between the gut, microbiota and ocular surface.

Clinical interest: Systemic Ophthalmology

She is involved in clinical and diagnostic ophthalmic activity. When appropriate, her assessment also considers factors related to nutrition, lifestyle and prevention as supportive elements within the diagnostic and therapeutic pathway.

The Test as an Investigative Tool

The ocular microbiota test is a second‑level metagenomic analysis. It is not a treatment and does not replace ophthalmological evaluation or first‑line testing. It can provide additional information on the possible balance (eubiosis) or alterations (dysbiosis) of the ocular bacterial flora, which the specialist then interprets and contextualises within the patient’s overall clinical picture.
